Recap: C-GEM chats careers at startups!

This week we spoke with Dr. Nathanael Goldberg and Dr. Anthony Silvestri about careers at startups. Dr. Goldberg trained in synthetic chemistry and directed evolution before joining Aralez, a small startup in the Bay Area that makes noncanonical amino acids using biocatalysis. Dr. Silvestri trained in organocatalysis, CH-activation chemistry, peptide stapling, among other things before jumping to industry. He is now the Director of Chemistry at Unnatural Products, a small startup in Santa Cruz that is pursuing therapeutic peptide macrocycles.

We learned about the fast-paced and varied work environment of a startup company, and the excitement around solving interesting problems in creative ways. While a strong technical background is necessary, they also emphasized the importance of effective communication, as scientists in startups are often talking with the business, production, and sales people in the company. Ultimately they emphasized the importance of knowing yourself – your strengths, interests, and passions – when putting together job applications.

Thanks to Drs. Goldberg and Silvestri for spending an hour of their busy days with us!
